Alcohol Detox Treatments are a critical first step component for people seeking recovery from alcoholism. Due to the physical nature of addiction to alcohol it’s very important to not try a alcohol detox treatment at home alone. Please seek medical advice before detoxifying from alcohol as withdrawing without medicine can result in seizures and even death.

Rarely, if ever, does an alcoholic realize on his or her own the need for treatment and medical help. Invariably, it is an external agent – a family member, friend or colleague who realizes the danger the alcoholic faces and gets alcohol detoxification help for the ailing addict. This is a part of being in denial – having a severely diminished awareness of the extent of the drinking and the negative consequences thereof. Alcohol detox treatment is akin to squeezing the water out of a wet cloth – the patient is literally dried out. The analogy however ends when considering the effect steady consumption of alcohol has had on the alcoholics health and psyche.

Every organ in the body reacts to external substances – whether helpful or harmful – in unpredictable ways. It is only with regular consumption that the body begins to truly accept whatever is offered. Similarly, while new drinkers might find the drink unpalatable and often vomit the contents of their stomach in rejecting the spirit, over time such reactions might vanish, leaving the person feeling very comfortable in drinking large volumes. This sort of drinking begins to steadily affect the organs without the patient realizing it. The most general signs of alcohol abuse are seen in the liver, where cirrhosis tends to occur.

Such corruption in the body creates an unconscious dependency on alcohol. The process of drying out is therefore all the more harder as the body starts manifesting symptoms indicating the craving for alcohol. The inherent difficulty in monitoring the patient during this phase necessitates the isolation of the patient to a detox centre where he/she can be monitored by detox nurses who are experienced in alcoholism and medication used to wean the alcoholic off the drink. Such nurses are usually experienced in recognizing withdrawal symptoms while the same cannot be said of family members.

Also, alcohol detox treatment involves a careful and accurate diagnosis of the particular patient’s behaviour. Since each person has a different physiological make-up it is impossible to generalize what nature the withdrawal symptoms may have. The causes for alcoholism also need to be analyzed at this stage. This requires clinical physicians who are well-versed both in detoxification as well as rudimentary psychiatric analysis. In the absence of other specialists, it falls upon the detox physician to act as a counsellor and guide who can assist the patient out of his/her problem with a complete awareness of alcoholism recovery.

But the path to recovery has another milestone. Alcohol detox treatment is not just about getting the patient sober, but also about rebuilding a healthy lifestyle and attitude, which is how relapses are best prevented. After alcohol detox treatment and longer term rehabilitation, a careful reintroduction of social conditions and working life are required.

Attending aftercare treatment is a major help to abstaining from alcohol. In fact patients who attend aftercare counselling and engage in Alcoholics Anonymous have a better chance of staying sober than those who don’t.
